February 2005, Grade B-. This game was intriguing enough when I read about it several years ago that, when I finally bought a new computer, I took the time to find and buy a copy. I found a copy in the Lights Out game package. It was not great but it was worth playing. Since I found in interesting even with the God mode cheat active, it must have been pretty good.

Alice is basically a third person shooter. Most levels are pretty simple and short. The only goal is to kill the enemies and get to the next level. There is very little to pick up except weapons and health. The route is basically linear. Even the mazes are not really mazes. Puzzles are so rare that the puzzle solving part of my brain never got switched on. They are simple, but I don't think I solved even one on my own.

While that does not sound like something I would be interested in, there are redeaming features. The excellent scenery is very surreal and interesting and there is plenty to explore. I have never seen anything like it in any other game. You can save any time you want and as many times as you want. The weapons are unique and interesting and though they don't 100% autotarget, they target close enough to be enjoyable. The cards are similar to a machine gun, the ice wand is similar to a flame thrower, and the jacks are sort of like a strange grenade. I just wish there had been a cheat for unlimited ammo. Try the Allweapons cheat if you like but once activated you cannot turn it off. The only way I could make unlimited ammo work was to activate the God mode cheat, which CAN be turned ON and OFF. Getting through some of the levels takes a lot of careful character control, which I enjoyed, and even though character control is not super smooth, it is smooth enough.

I used the walk throughs at GameBoomers.com. The one by Soren is the most accurate. The other one is brief if that is what you prefer.
